A few days after Apple unveiled its new 15-inch MacBook Pro, its first shipment has already arrived. Dubbed as the company’s “most beautiful computer,” the device was introduced during the Worldwide Developers Conference last June 11. It features a Retina Display, MagSafe 2 connector, unibody chassis and upgraded connectivity options.
Inside the New MacBook Pro
Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro features an impressive 2880 x 1880-pixel display. It is also 75 percent less reflective than other glossy monitors because of its deep blacks and reduced glare. That’s why the company also updated its OS X apps to take advantage of the high-definition display. This includes Mail, Safari, iMovie, iPhoto, Aperture and Final Cut Pro.
The notebook also boasts MagSafe 2 power connector, which looks like identical to its predecessor but with internal redesign. It also has a unibody chassis with high-density batteries that could help accommodate additional power draw from Retina Display.
In addition, the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display sports USB 3.0, dedicated HDMI-out port, and SD card reader. Because the notebook no longer has an optical drive, the connectivity options are now relocated on the right side of the device.
The device runs on Intel Ivy Bridge processor that can be configured up to 16 GB of RAM. Its batteries also got a boost of up to 7 hours, as well as 720-pixel FaceTime camera with dual microphones, backlit keyboard, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi.
Out of the Box: 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display
Once it’s unboxed, it’s obvious that the notebook is thinner and lighter than its 15-inch predecessor. However, it is still thicker and heavier than the 13-inch MacBook Air because of its 256 GB flash memory drive and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics. When placed side-by-side, both devices are identical at the thickest point. But the ultraslim notebook features a tapered design that gets thinner toward the front.
The Retina Display, on the other hand, is the next-generation MacBook Pro’s most prominent feature. It boasts crisp text, vibrant colors, and the OS X 10.7 apps got a facelift to take advantage of the beefed up screen resolution.
Just like the MacBook Air, the notebook’s instant-on capability makes it boot quickly, go to sleep as soon as the lid is closed, and turns on immediately when reopened. The flash memory-based solid state drive also gives the device a performance boost.
AppleInsider posted images of the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display last Friday, as well as discounted offers for the device from various retailers with the help of their sponsor MacMall. The notebook has 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz variants that cost $2,199 and $2,799 respectively.
