To celebrate Father’s day this Sunday, video games publisher Electronic Arts – commonly referred to as simply EA – will be offering significant discounts on some of its most popular Android titles including FIFA 12, Need for Speed, Plants vs. Zombies and Dead Space.

Although EA has been around for decades on a variety of platforms, it has been steadfast in its approach to mobile, and if you’re still stuck on what to buy your dad for father’s day, a couple of cheap Android titles might just do the trick.

How To Recover Deleted Photos And Images From Memory Card On Your Android Phone

We can all empathize with the sinking feeling felt when something important is erroneously deleted from our smartphones, but instead of becoming lost for good, the DiskDigger team has created an Android app to help you recover those precious files you thought had disappeared into the Recycle Bin of no return.

DiskDigger is a household name already, and if you’re a Windows user, you may already have been acquainted with the tool that spares your files from the hangman’s noose at the eleventh hour. The tool carries all of its strengths through to Android, and if you’ve recently deleted a file and are having second thoughts, DiskDigger is arguably your best hope of a reprieve.

You Can Now Turn Your Instagram Photos Into A Personalized iPhone/iPad Case

Everyone is a big fan of Instagram here at Redmond Pie. We’re not happy unless we are posting photos of our cats on the social network that was built to enable sharing of photos. Now that the company has shared an Android version with us after a long wait, then there really is no reason for anyone not to be as enthralled as we are.

If you’re as big a fan of Instagram as we are or, dare we say it, an even bigger fan, then the chances are you post some pretty awesome photos to the network. We’ve seen some cracking images flash through our streams before and way before that as well, plenty of which we would be happy to have adorn our walls. But what if you want your handiwork to help protect your flashy new iPad?

Reduce Audio Latency On Your Nexus S And GSM Galaxy Nexus With This Mod

Although Android is the most commonly used mobile ecosystem on the market, it’s not without its fair share of caveats. Aside from the scores of malware outbreaks plaguing Google’s mobile OS, there’s also the long-standing issue of audio latency.

"Big deal!" I hear you exclaim, and while audio latency may not be too much of an issue for the overwhelming majority, those using the likes of Skype, or the increasingly-popular mobile instrument and music production apps available, will notice just how significant it can turn out to be. Tapping the virtual drum, for example, and waiting for a split-second for the sound to be played from your device’s speaker, adversely affects the experience, and given said apps can often be priced into the tens of dollars, it’s simply not on.

5 Simple (But Hidden!) Tricks All The New iPhone/iPad Owners Should Know

tada
Once upon a time, the iPhone was a simple thing. You flipped it on, slid the unlock switch, and what you saw was what you got.
Since then, things have gotten a bit more… layered. That’s not to say they’ve gotten any harder to use; iOS just has a ridiculous number of hidden bonus features now that are in no way immediately obvious to the untrained eye. Given that yesterday was Christmas, I’d wager that the number of untrained eyes out there is at an all-time high.
If you consider yourself something of an iOS expert, this list isn’t for you. If the terms “jailbreak” and “rooting” have any sort of secondary, technical connotation to you, you can almost certainly skip right over this. This one’s for the curious newbie; the moms, pops, and younger siblings of the world; the Android converts who may be feeling a bit out of place. It’s a collection of things I’m regularly surprised to find that other iOS device owners don’t know. If it’s not for you, you almost certainly know someone who it is for.

Xbox 720, Kinect 2 And Kinect Glasses Revealed In Leaked Microsoft Slides, Slated For Release In 2013

It really isn’t a secret that Microsoft has grand plans to roll out a next-generation gaming console, thanks to a number of technical and aesthetic specifications spreading across the world wide web in the last few months. The video game industry is staggeringly large and generates billions of dollars in revenue on an annual basis for the top players in the game, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Redmond based company have their Xbox department busy producing something remarkable to capitalize on the hype.

Regardless of whether you sit on the Xbox or PlayStation side of the fence, the purported Xbox 720 looks set to ruffle a few feathers and possibly convert a few PS3 fans over to the dark side of gaming when it is officially announced. If the details contained within a leaked 56 page document are anything to go by then it seems like 2013 will be the year which will formally introduce us to the 720, with a number of intricate and technical details also being outlined in the paper. The internal document, marked as for discussion only, dates back to the fourth quarter of 2010 and discusses a number of proposals which may or may not still be relevant today.

How To Get The Best iOS 6 Features On iOS 5 Right Now

After including major missing features in iOS 3, 4 and 5, iOS 6 has turned out to be more of an incremental update than anything else. Other than Maps, there are no downright mind-blowing features. Everything iOS 6-related announced by Forstall at WWDC 2012, we’ve seen in one form or another whether as a Cydia tweak or a minor feature on other platforms.
Yes, I am tad disappointed at how things turned out at the event. I went through the iOS 6 keynote, wrote down every new feature mentioned in it and found that most of these features are available in iOS 5. They are definitely more scattered and less polished, but the functionality is there and that’s what we will be discussing in this post: how to get iOS 6’s best features on iOS 5 right now.

The GeekDad Manifesto

What does it mean to be a geek dad? Sure, it includes teaching your kids about Star Trek, Skyrim and superheroes. But it’s much more than that. It means showing them how things work and that with a little research, determination and trial and error they can bend the world to their will. It means showing them how to build and make and fix and break whatever they set their minds to. And it means getting them to approach problems with imagination — which makes anything possible.

The SEC's 124 pointed questions for Facebook

The Securities and Exchange Commission had a series of pointed questions for Facebook ahead of its public debut -- especially around advertising sales and the extensive control CEO Mark Zuckerberg maintains over the company he created, according to documents made public Friday.

Bravely going where Pixar animation tech has never gone

With "Brave," the hit-making studio broke new ground in the way it animated flowing hair, fur, clothing, and water. And it invented new software to make it all happen.

As people, we understand instinctively what flowing hair looks like. Or the way layers of clothes move on someone's body, or how water would splash when a bear runs through it. If it looks unnatural, our brains know -- and get distracted by it.

Apple and Samsung rule the smartphone roost

Smartphone shipments increased 41% year-over-year to 144.6 million as of the quarter ending March 2012.

Phones gain ability to learn by touching

There's a form of extra-sensory perception called psychometry, whose practitioners claim to learn things about objects by touching them. Smartphones set to be released this month by Samsung and Sony will have some of that ability: they'll learn things when you touch them to pre-programmed "tags."

For example, you can program a tag with your phone number, and stick it on your business card. When someone taps the phone to the card, the phone would call you. Or you can put a tag on your night stand. Place the phone there, and it goes into "alarm clock" mode, holding your calls until the morning.

Samsung Electronics Co. announced this week that it will be selling these tags in the form of stickers it calls "TecTiles" — $15 for 5 of them. They'll work with its new flagship Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone, set to launch in a few weeks, and several others already in the market, including the HTC EVO 4G LTE sold by Sprint Nextel.

Apple To Give Podcasts A New Home In iOS 6 With Its Very Own Dedicated App

Podcast listeners and viewers around the world, rejoice, for soon you may have a new way of managing your podcasts on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch if reports are to be believed.

According to new reports coming out of AllThingsD, Apple may be about to break Podcasts out of the iTunes app, giving the audio and video shows a whole new app to live in.

The news comes as Apple releases the first iOS 6 beta for testing by developers, with plenty of changes coming across a variety of first-party applications. The App Store itself is even receiving a facelift, and the notion that a Podcast app could also be added before the Fall release data is one that will no doubt make many happy.

Acer Aspire S5 Is The World’s Thinnest Ultrabook, Features Ivy Bridge Processor, USB 3.0 And More

Much like the manner in which the iPhone arrived and changed the face of the smartphone market, the developments of Apple’s MacBook range has left notebook manufacturers chasing shadows. In answer to the MacBook Air (and as of Monday, the next-gen MacBook Pro), Windows OEMs have basically attempted to copy the thin, light and powerful trident by creating ultrabooks.

Unfortunately for manufacturers of the ultrabook including Samsung, Acer and ASUS, they haven’t done particularly well in the market hitherto, with consumers still tending to favor Apple’s offering. Intel’s Ivy Bridge chip, which is now an integral part of the entire MacBook range as part of Monday’s WWDC refresh, has been in short supply, and with the Cupertino company commanding first dibs on the initial shipments, the ultrabook is now even farther behind the MacBook.

At a bit of a loss, it would seem, with regards to a battle plan, Acer has announced what it claims to be the world’s thinnest ultrabook, called the Aspire S5. As well as being among the first Windows-based notebooks to feature the coveted Ivy Bridge processors, it will pack a 256GB SSD, with prices starting at $1,399.

Samsung's latest flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S3, is about to launch in the US. I'm excited! But I'm also confused. Is this my dream phone, one that I can use with both AT&T and Verizon? Getting a straight answer has proven tough.

Apple iOS 6: Best New Features

Apple showed off tons of new features in iOS 6 at WWDC, including some hoped-for improvements and several complete surprises.

In iOS 6, Apple Has Added Push Notifications For Government Alerts

Apple has added push notification-support for Government alerts (“AMBER Alerts” and “Emergency Alerts”) in iOS 6, according to CNET.

As you can see in the above image, two new toggles – one for “AMBER Alerts,” and another for “Emergency Alerts” – have appeared in the “Notifications” section of the built-in Settings app in iOS 6. Users have the option of enabling what we presume to be push notifications for these two alert-types, meaning that in the event of an emergency, users would receive a notification on their iDevice.

AMBER Alerts, as iDownloadBlog notes, “are sent out to the public on the suspicion of a child abduction.” While the more general Emergency Alerts would be activated in the event of severe weather, such as an approaching hurricane or flash flooding.

As of this moment, we’re not sure how Apple is going to fit this clever feature into the final release of iOS 6. From what we’ve heard, the toggles haven’t appeared on all U.S. iDevices running iOS 6 beta 1, and even so, they’ll surely be country-specific and perhaps even U.S.-only (at least to begin with).

If you’ve spotted something in iOS 6 beta 1 that we haven’t published on, be sure to let us know in the comments.
