Time Inc. to sell tablet magazine subscriptions through Apple’s Newsstand

Time Inc, the largest magazine publisher in the United States, has set aside any misgivings about Apple policy by revealing that 20 of its digital magazines are now be available via the Apple Newsstand.

These magazines will include TIME, People, Sports Illustrated, InStyle and Entertainment Weekly, all of which will be available on a subscription basis to those owning Apple's iPad, according to The New York Times.

"For a magazine or brand like People or Time, a tablet will become an increasingly important part of the experience," said Time Inc. new CEO Laura Lang. "Our goal is to offer content where our consumers want to read it."

Unlike Condé Nast and Hearst, Time has been cautious over the introduction of Apple’s Newsstand, which collates and organizes the latest digital magazines into a virtual bookshelf, and previously only sold it magazines via solitary apps on the App Store.

The whole issue was around Apple’s business model of taking 30% revenue for in-app purchases, while Time Inc. was also previously unhappy over Apple's control of customer data (i.e. who is using the applications).

Apple’s Newsstand currently holds more than 5,000 magazines and newspapers, and Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, said yesterday that the majority of the more than five million newsstand customers buy subscriptions rather than individual magazines.
